New years resolution season is upon us. Here are my top 6 tips to having your healthiest year yet with a plant-based diet.
Allow Cheat Days At First
When you switch to a plant-based diet for health reasons it is best to be patient. If you say you are never going to eat animal products again, and then you do, you will feel as though you failed and want to give up. However, if you think “I’m going to start eating plant-based meals” you will feel successful right away and it will fuel you to keep reaching for your plant-based goal.
Experiment With New Foods
When I switched to a plant-based diet, I actually ended up eating more variety. It seems counter intuitive that when you cut out huge portions of your typical diet you are left with more options. I think this happens because you need to get creative when you aren’t eating what everyone else is eating. When you get creative you discover a plethora of options you didn’t know existed. There is a HUGE variety of plant foods from all over the world available to us. You will start noticing grains you have never tried, especially in the bulk section of health food stores. You will also discover lots of fruits and vegetables that you have never tasted.
Be Prepared When You Travel
Traveling on a plant-based diet is easy when you are prepared and have a plan. By this I mean pack food in your cooler, if you can. There are many great options to pack when you travel! This way you are always guaranteed the ability to eat plant-based. My essentials are: cut vegetables, hummus, energy bites, bananas, and peanut butter. If you plan to fly bring lots of healthy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, and granola. Once you get to your destination, buy fruits and vegetables that can be eaten raw.
Use More Herbs And Spices
The variety of flavor you get from adding herbs and spices is unbelievable. This is key to keeping your food interesting and not feeling like you are eating the same thing over and over. It’s even better when you start mixing and layering spices. The best part is that herbs and spices have extra nutrients and many health benefits. It’s a win-win. I suggest locating the bulk herbs and spices at your local health food store. You will be able to open the containers and smell away. You will get and accurate sense of what it’s going to taste like and you can buy a very small amount at first to try it.
Watch Food Documentaries
This is a great way to stay motivated. When you are armed with knowledge it is much easier to continue on your path. Documentaries provide useful information but it feels like you’re watching a movie. Plus watching with friends and family will help them understand your diet and reasoning behind it. My shortlist of films that have inspired me are:
Write A Mission Statement
Write a short statement of your reasons for eating a plant-based diet. Writing your mission statement will help you to dig deep and find your true motivation. Put it somewhere you will see it every day (like on your fridge). Using your own words in this way can be extremely effective.
With these tips you will have no problem staying plant-based all year long. I hope you enjoyed this article. Head over to the recipes page to see what I’ve been cooking recently. Don’t forget to subscribe for recipes and articles directly to your inbox.
