Tempeh is such a versatile ingredient. It is made from fermented soybeans and has an incredibly “meaty” texture. I also love how tempeh absorbs flavor when it is marinated. In this recipe you will marinate tempeh in a salty smokey mixture to give it a bacon-like flavor. This tempeh bacon will make you feel filled up and satisfied without the bloated, weighed down feeling afterwards.
This recipe is best when it is started in advance. I recommend marinating the tempeh for at least 3 hours but it is best when done overnight. It is also best to cook the tempeh bacon on a thick bottomed pan, like cast iron. It will heat and cook more evenly that way.
Tempeh is good for you because it has all the nutrients of soy. It is a complete protein, helps lower cholesterol, and is a great source of fiber. This “bacon” is also fat free! You can enjoy all the delicious flavor of bacon without worrying about the negative impact on your health. All of the ingredients in this recipe are healthy, wholesome, and vegan so you can feel great about what you are eating.
- 8 oz. package tempeh
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp liquid smoke
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
- Cut the tempeh into long thin strips, approximately 1/4" thick. Mix all other ingredients together in a large zipper bag. Add the tempeh, seal, and allow to marinate for at least 2.5 hours, preferably overnight.
- Heat a large, heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated tempeh strips and cook for 3 minutes on each side, until golden and crispy. Serve immediately.
